School wins battle to make street safer for students

New parking restrictions have been agreed on Staveley Road, opposite Chiswick Community School, following a request from the school to ban cars parking on the road as a safety measure for students.

Councillors at the Chiswick Area Committee meeting last Tuesday (November 16th) agreed to the 'school keep clear ' restriction, along with a "no stopping, no waiting at any time" parking measure. However an amendment was added to allow for single and not double yellow lines, to accommodate evening parking and for the benefit of local residents.

Coaches taking visitors to the nearby Chiswick House and school buses will still park in the designated areas. The proposals also included a lengthening of the two bus stop clearways.

The Community School had sought the measures to improve safety for pupils crossing Staveley Road at the new traffic island.

Objections to the changes had been made by nearby allotment users, a local resident, and people visiting the cemetery who claimed the measure would make it difficult to find a place to park and would inconvenience people with mobility problems.

But the Council claimed that on-street parking was still available for visitors to the cemetery and for those with mobility problems, vehicle access to the cemetery could be arranged. It argued that the measures were needed to prevent "obstructive and dangerous parking" in the area.

The cost of implementing the parking restrictions is £4,000 which will be taken from a Transport for London fund.
