Occupation Lane is to be closed to traffic between South Ealing Road and Clayponds Avenue with physical barriers installed to prevent access.

Council contractors have been instructed to implement the closure by Monday 6 July.

A letter to residents states, “These measures are designed to provide more space for people to observe social distancing and will improve road safety for those making trips on foot or bike. The number of people using these modes has increased significantly in recent weeks given official advice remains to avoid public transport. These measures have been informed by our Streetspace consultation and will also support wider council priorities to improve air quality and address the climate emergency.”

The closure is being implemented by an Experimental Traffic Order which means that the council does not have a legal requirement to make residents aware of their plans in the press. They say they will review feedback received over the next six months before deciding whether or not to make the closure permanent.

Reaction from residents has been mixed so far with those living in Chestnut Avenue in particular worried about the displacement of traffic to their road. Some have commented that the narrowness of the road which runs by South Ealing cemetery made it unsuitable for traffic and have welcomed the closure.

The council is also planning to make Green Dragon Lane access only.
