A plan to convert garages and unused storage space into a boxing gym and recreational facility has been given the green light by Hounslow Council.
It will create a new multi-use community centre for local residents under Boulton House on Green Dragon Lane. As well as having a boxing gym the centre will have a dance studio and recreational space, along with associated kitchen, storage and changing facilities.
The application was made from Hounslow Civic Centre and it is understood that the gym will operate on a similar basis to the one set up on the Ivybridge Estate after the stabbing to death of Sahill Roy. The aim would be to give young people vulnerable to gang involvement an activity. It would operate as a gym only with no fights being held.
There were only two objections to the proposal made on the basis of possible anti-social behaviour and the loss of parking space. These were dismissed by the planning authority.
The new gym would be in the same footprint as existing buildings with a floor area of 775sqm and will have a windowed frontage.
The current site is by a car park serving residents of Boulton House and nearby Maudslay House and is close to Green Dragon Primary School.
