Local MP Steps Up Campaign Against Heathrow Night Flights

Greg Hands MP for Chelsea and Fulham reporting back

Greg Hands has launched a petition on the issue during consultation

April 29, 2024

Dear Resident,

As you will remember from my resignation from the Government in 2018, to vote against the third runway at Heathrow, I always put constituents and our local area first.

Therefore, I am encouraging Chelsea & Fulham residents to respond to the Government’s consultation titled: Night flight restrictions: Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted airports from October 2025. To read more about the official consultation, visit here.

The deadline is on 22 May 2024, so make sure you respond to this official consultation before then. To respond, click here.

In response to this consultation, I have launched a petition urging a comprehensive ban on night flights at Heathrow Airport between 23:00 and 06:00.

I hear first-hand from concerned and distressed residents, who are directly under Heathrow’s flight path, about the detrimental impact the noise of night flights has on their lives.

As a reminder, I am firmly against night flights. They are a wholly unnecessary strain on the liveability of London including Chelsea and Fulham and are indefensible due to the negative effect they have on hundreds of thousands of people’s sleep. I have always opposed night flights and have campaigned against them across successive Governments.

Only implementing an outright ban on night flights between 23:00 and 06:00 would truly stop noise disturbance and safeguard overflown communities from adverse health impacts. If you agree, sign my petition HERE!

Heathrow currently allows an average of 16 such flights to arrive been 04:30 and 06:00 each night. These are typically flown from the Far East, cities like Hong Kong and Singapore, where to arrive in our daytime (after 06:00), they would need to depart the Far East after midnight. Instead, for the convenience of passengers, they typically leave before midnight and arrive at Heathrow before 06:00.

It has long been my view that these night flights are run for the convenience of a few thousand passengers, and at the expense of hundreds of thousands of people living below, under the flight path. This should change.

At the time of writing over 900 people have already signed my petition – huge thanks to those who have already taken the time to sign!

I am keen to reach as many Chelsea and Fulham residents as possible, so please do share my petition with family, friends, neighbours and colleagues in our constituency.

Only last week, Heathrow’s CFO confirmed that Heathrow bosses are speeding up the review of a third runway. This is alarming news for Chelsea & Fulham with the flightpath right above our local area.

Thank you for reading this and keep a look out for more updates on this key local campaign.

Best wishes,

Greg Hands
