Fulham Broadway’s David Lloyd Club reopens today, Monday February 19, after undergoing a spectacular £6.5 million upgrade, turning it into one of the most luxurious health clubs in the country.

As well as a ‘refreshed’ 20 metre swimming pool, new studios, state of the art gym and clubroom, the club is offering a huge choice of classes including new family friendly group exercises and supervised kids’ club activities.

For adults only meanwhile, there is a Spa Retreat, with tempting new experiences including a Himalayan salt sauna and a fire and ice experience room.

All those luxuries however don’t come cheap. The club, on the top floor of Fulham Broadway shopping centre, says it currently has special opening offers, but the ongoing cost is set to be over £200 per month, along with a booking fee of £75. There is also a three month notice period for those wishing to leave.

Fortunately, Fulham also has a range of options for those with smaller budgets. PureGym in Jerdan Place, GymGroup in North End Road and Anytime Fitness Hurlingham in Peterborough’s Piper Building all offer membership deals priced from under £30 to around £50 per month, depending on access - for instance off peak to round the clock - and length of contract.

These ‘no frills' clubs all offer fully equipped gyms, support with training and a range of exercise classes.

However, a pool is a priority for many people and again Fulham has plenty to offer. Nuffield Health Fitness and Wellbeing Gym, by the river in Stevenage Road, offers a swimming pool, sauna and steam room as well as a fully equipped gym, large variety of classes and back up from onsite experts. A monthly contract with a 12-month commitment costs £65 for off peak access or £76 for any time, and a flexible monthly plan is also available for just a pound more at £77.

Charing Cross Sports Club, by Charing Cross Hospital, has a 25-metre pool, three gym areas, group exercise classes, squash courts, a multi-sports hall, badminton courts and a range of other services. Membership, with a minimum six-month term, is £41 per month off peak or £59 all inclusive.

Virgin Active in Normand Park has just upgraded its gym floor, offering a range of classes including Reformer Pilates along with its 25-metre swimming pool and outdoor tennis courts. Its packages start at £81 for off peak or £94.99 for multi-access membership with a 12-month commitment, or £128 for a rolling month deal plus a £30 booking fee. There are also discounts for younger people.

Alongside these facilities, in the same building, is Fulham Pools, run by Hammersmith & Fulham Council. It also has a 25 metre eight lane gala pool, along with a teaching pool, gym, tennis courts, cafe and creche.

Visitors to Fulham Pools can simply pay in cash, with swim sessions priced under £5 and gym sessions priced at £4.60 off peak or £5.50 at peak times. People making more frequent visits can instead pay £22.95 for a monthly membership card, providing free access to the gym and swimming pool.

There is also a Whole Borough Leisure Card, priced £29.95, which includes access to Fulham Pools along with H&F Council’s four other leisure centres.

These facilities, run by Better, include Fulham’s Lillie Road Centre, which has a fully equipped gym and a range of classes which can also be booked individually by non-members. Classes cost £8.75 while access to the gym costs £10.90.

The Whole Borough Leisure Card also offers free access to H&F Council’s other leisure centres, Hammersmith Fitness & Squash Centre by Hammersmith Broadway, Linford Christie Sports Centre by Wormwood Scrubs and Phoenix Fitness Centre and Janet Adegoke Swimming Pool in White City. Again, low-cost single sessions can be booked individually at all these centres.

Fulham also offers the chance to get fit for free, with open air gyms available in Normand and South Parks, and newcomers welcome to join the free, hugely popular 5km parkrun, taking place in Bishops Park every Saturday morning at 9am.
